Early behavioral markers in social-communicative domains can now be reliably identified in children as young as 18 months. Based on data accumulated by comprehensive studies over the last few decades, a lack of or reduced joint attention behavior such as following another’s point or gaze is thought to be a strong predictor of later ASD diagnosis. Early intervention is one factor that would likely make a difference to the quality of life of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families over both the short and long terms.
